Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
