A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
